Excuse the hysteria. After I disconnected the Zip Drive, the machine came
back to life (don't know why). Then I reconnected the Zip, and all is still
well.
However, the prolonged hang-ups persist. After the machine has finished
starting up, there is a period of 15 to 20 seconds where it is dead - the
mouse will move, but clicking on anything has no effect. This also happens
while working, regardless of the application - even in the Finder, at
irregular, but all too frequent, intervals. Then, after the hang-up "times
out", the previous mouse clicks are executed (they were remembered).
Being my wife's machine I am not sure when it started. Recent changes on the
machine include the installation of Office 98 (minus the menu bar addition
next to the Finder) and LocalTalkBridge (which I have disabled with no
effect on the problem). I suspect Office. Any suggestions on what extensions
might be causing it? Or is there, possibly, another reason?
