Office often installs a 'horrible' app that indexes the files at
startup (not sure if the Mac version does it, but the PC version has
one called 'Fast Find') this will slow down your startup and (again on
the PC) cause general slowdowns as it periodically re-indexes the hdd,
if this is the case trash or disable the offending extension and all
should be OK.
