That is a classic example of what we call "SCSI Voodoo."  Zip drives are known
to have poor termination, and can cause the exact symptoms that you are
describing.  I always recommend leaving a Zip drive in the middle of the SCSI
chain and using a scanner of something else to provide termination.  If the Zip
is the only external device you have then get a DB-25 terminator and put it on
the second port on the back of the zip.  That will *gaurantee* that the thing
is terminated.
