It's not unreasonable to suspect Office.

Have you recently rebuilt your desktop?  Have you run any disk diagnostic
utilities on your hard drive?  Has the hard drive been recently defragged?
Is File Sharing on?  What are virtual memory settings?

I have 8.6 on my StarMax 3000 desktop, 80 megs ram. A major performance
bottleneck seems to be the 1.2 gig IDE hard drive.
