Things must be somewhat different on your side of the water, I am not
familiar with any modems that use the parallel port on a PC, also if
they did then it would be virtually impossible to drive them from a
Mac.
That aside, as Tafkar states, virtually any external modem will work
on a Mac, you will however need to get either a Mac serial cable for
the modem or a serial adapter to convert the round 8 pin port to a PC
style 9 pin 'D' connector,
'generic' Hayes compatible drivers will work with almost any external
modem, however it is worth looking on the web site of your chosen
brand to see if they have written Mac specific drivers / utils.
