Almost all PC modems are compatible with the mac, most are identical. 
You just need a mac serial cable to PC serial (usually 25 pin). The 
exception is anything called a "Win" modem. These are simple hardware 
interfaces, where the modem part  is run in software.

You may not save much if you're considering a name-brand modem. The 
PC and Mac versions are about the same price. Also, if you buy a 
cheap modem, make sure it is easy to return. There is a reason why 
they are cheap.

All the software drivers you need for the Internet, are in a folder 
in the extensions folder. If your brand isn't there, try Hayes.

I'd recommend a US Robotics. Chances are, you'll be connecting to one.
