"Winmodems" are not an option for a Mac; even for a PC if you are aware
of the trade-offs. Their sole saving grace is "cheapness" ( a paradox if I
ever saw one).

US Robotics and others in the brand-name space often charge *more*
for their Mac versions at retail outlets, and I have even seen prices higher
on-line. What gives there??? Apples have superior DSP chips to their
Wintel counterparts, shouldn't the modems cost LESS?
I am never quite sure what a brand name is in the Mac world, but my Macs
have been running very well with the Best data 56k external modems - and do
not tax my power supply or use up a valuable slot for no reason I can think
of.
Just my experience, but they consistently connect on 2 PPC's at 48k w/o
hassle
under OS 9.x. I use the external power, with cable connection through...the
Apple Modem port!!!

Hmmm...the OS9 install is lacking in 56k drivers and modem scripts
at 9.0x for all modems, and I would head to the vendor's web site for
drivers.
For example, if I used the Best Data extension provided or the generic
Hayes,
I would suffer performance degradation compared to heading off to their web
site and getting the right driver.

I thought the US Robotics were overpriced, and somewhat suspect, as they are
a "pusher" of Win Modems for Intel platforms, which IMHO are a needless
consumer of limited resources on the Wintel box. In other words, I trust the
vendor who sells a lower priced product, but am suspicious of the high-end
vendor who offers a "cheap fix" to tide you over until you have more cash.
