Sandra, thanks for the kind words. I've spent years honing that message
to the point where hardly anyone complains about receiving it -- and most
take corrective action right away. (Some need several reminders.) I'd
guess that sooner or later every regular poster makes the mistake and
receives this "friendly" warning:

This is a semi-automatic message from Dan, the listmom.

Thanks for posting to the list.

Please be careful not to quote *too much* of the original message (your
recent posting is quoted below) when replying to the list -- especially
the header and/or footer. (You're not being singled out; we send this to
everyone who does that.)

Thanks!

As always, correction should be done privately, not on the list.

That's really a subjective thing. From my vantage point, it depends on
how you're replying to the original message.

For instance, when sending out the "oops, you quoted too much" email, I
put my message at the head and then quote the entire original afterward.

Other times you are carrying on a dialog with parts of the original
message, so you might insert a reply following the section you're
responding to -- as I'm doing in this message.

Each method of replying has its place -- and both should involve
selective quoting of the original. And that's especially helpful on a
busy list like this one.
