To get iTunes to run on OS 8.6 follow this hack found on resexcellence:

It will run on any OS 9 and above.
If you want my personal recommendation, I believe that Audion with its skins
equalizer encoding and skip free playback is the best MP3 app available. It
is worth the shareware price.
