The generation story is actually based on the PPC's descent from the
original IBM RS/6000 architecture.
G1 601s were intended as a bridge and included most of the original POWER
instructions.
G2 603-604s were slimmer, faster PPCs with most of the "fat" trimmed and
POWER instructions that were removed from the silicon were in turn
emulated in software.
The G3 750 isn't really all that different from the G2, save that the
FPU is a 603-era system and not a 604, and the backside cache architecture.
And, of course, the advances of the G4 7400 series are well-known.
