The only 2 reasons that would exist that are against installing an ATA card:
1) You do not have a free PCI slot
2) Possible video and or sound stuttering
I have a 7300/180 (now G4/425) and a Sonnet Tempo Ultra ATA 66 PCI card (w/
a 20GB ATA 100 Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 60 HD). I have only good things to
say about them. First the cost is lower, especially the dollars to megabytes
ratio. Secondly, the speed is much faster than the internal SCSI 2 bus,
about 2 to 6 times faster depending on the speed drive. The Apple installed
SCSI 2 2GB drive has a score of just less than 5 MB/sec, I was getting
appox. 34MB/sec in a stock 7300/180 system.
The card itself has 2 channels allowing 4 devices (2 masters and two
slaves), and the new Ultra ATA 100 PCI card also officially supports
virtually all CD/CDRW/DVD drives. It is possible to have a maximum of 300GB
to 400GB using 100GB drives.
Now that I have typed the big improvements, the big problems with PCI/IDE
cards are timing, some people have had AV stuttering playing music or
movies. I can see why the stuttering exists if you are doing intensive
tasks, I have that problem. Many people are using virtual memory which slows
the system down which a possible cause of AV stuttering or putting the card
in a slot that is too fast or too slow (the three slots are cued in
different priority).
I sure that there are differing opinions out there, this is just my 2 cents
worth.
