yes, it was probably a bad idea, the chips may draw larger current
spikes, and the filter caps on the logic board may not be able to
provide stable enough power under these conditions. the other problem,
depending on the design, is the load (i.e. how much signal power it
takes) on the address lines. i wouldn't give up completely however,
they may work fine if you reset the cuda and zap the pram, some macs can
be funny that way. especially since you upgraded the cache i would
definitely zap the pram, i've seen this cause problems on a 7100 (not a
pci mac, but still a mac). sometimes part of the mac os knows more than
other parts it seems, which of course causes problems. in any case, i'd
definitely run techtool or another diagnostic even if the new ram
appears to work. if it's marginal a change in temperature could be
enough to make a difference.

"In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up
because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a
Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I
wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a
Protestant.
Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up."
