If money is not an object, I'd recommend a Global Village or 3Com/US
Robotics. Both are great modems and I've been using both for years. Even
modems listed as for PC should be usable on a Mac with the right modem cable
and a decent modem script, and even ones without modem scripts can likely be
used with FreePPP's autodetection routines.

These days pretty much any external modem should work pretty well, as you
bypass the issues with software-based modems
