So, my attempt at avoiding bursting into a fiery pillar follows: Tim, your comparison is not really accurate. A more-realistic comparison would compare the amount of power you use. You get enough power to run all your lights in the house for $20/month. Oh, you want to run a computer too? Add $20/month. Oh, and the TV and VCR as well? $20. Aw hell, you can power everything for a measly $80/month, all inclusive -- but you still won't be able to operate the stove at the same time as everything else. :-)
In all seriousness, it all depends on how important that bandwidth is to you. I would question the necessity for anyone to subscribe to all the specialty NHL channels on cable. Why? Because I don't watch hockey. However, if I could get 256k downloads on my computer at home (rural area), I'd easily pay over $100 for it. Priorities are diff for all.... Anyways, back to the topic at hand...we have a Starband satellite set up here that's two way, and works from anywhere. The down side is that you need to use a PC to run a proxy server for you (no Mac drivers yet), but it's relatively fast (3-500kbps), relatively inexpensive ($70/month), and you don't need a local dialup provider. You can find out more at http://www.starband.net about the dish connection....or at http://www.starbandusers.com for a third-party opinion.
