If you have some other storage option you could
try taking some stuff off the drive to create more
space; maybe it'll defrag then.
For this same reason, I recently purchased (cheap on
ebay) a 4 gig SCSI drive and an external case. Put
three partitions, one each for 7.5, 8.1 and 8.6 (which
is mostly what I use). Installed clean systems on
each of these. On the 8.6 part I also have a
folder called "Machine specific extensions" where I
put copies of drivers I might need for various
machines, like the Sonnet driver.
Also on this drive is every troubleshooting tool
and utility I can think of as well as installers of things like
Acrobat Reader, USB support, etc. that I might need in a pinch.
And there's plenty of space left over to offload large
amounts of stuff from a troubled drive if necessary.
This drive will connect with and mount every machine I deal with
and can start them up if necessary. Pretty good insurance
for about $50 total.
