don, are you saying you cannot boot at all from a cd? or is it just that the cache is not enabled? if the former, no can help. if the latter... i have a 7600/g3, OS 8.1, and this is how i get around the problem of NSD not wanting to operate on the startup disk or the disk that the program is residing on:
1) create a RAM disk using the memory control panel. (4 MB ought to do it) 2) reboot from CD (if the PRAM battery is good, it will remember the RAM disk settings). 3) drag the norton utilities folder to the ram disk. 4) launch SD _from_ _the_ _RAM_ _disk_. defragment the boot hard drive. 5) reboot, not from CD. 6) carry on as normal. you may also want to use the RAM disk for browser cache, SETI work units, busy hypercard stacks, heck, once i made a large one with a system folder. i couldn't believe how fast the finder worked! don't forget to back up occasionally (power outages do happen) and also before shutting down. works for me. i can't notice a difference in speed disk's speed with the g3 cache disabled. hope that helps, either immediately or in the near future. peter PCI PowerMacs wrote: > 11.
