Yes, the drive should spin up if it is set to whatever it's termination
and ID state IIRC. It would also stop the Mac booting. Does it have an
LED? I have found it to be the case on the two drives I have had seize
up that the LED flashes a repeating pattern of LED flashes that I've not
been able to diagnose but I think it means the start sequence failed. If
it is flashing it may well spell curtains for the drive (not
literally!!). If it came by post it may have been dropped or fallen and
not been sufficiently padded to take it, I insist on at least 1" of foam
on the sides and 2" on the top if I send a drive out, usually in a
proper HD box.
