If you don't need the 6 slots (5 or less [ * ] are actually usable), the 8600
is an excellent alternative, and can usually be found for a lot less.

The 8600 and 9600 share the same case, power supply, cooling, drive mounts
and bezels.

As the motherboards in the 8600/9600 case are mounted "flush with the top",
with a 3 slot motherboard installed you have a very large space at the bottom
of the case, which can accommodate four drives if stacked two high using a
custom-made bracket. The fan in the (side) door provides loads of extra
cooling required to support four drives in that position.

The 370 watt power supply can easily accommodate anything you are likely to
throw at it.

An 8600/9600 case accommodates SEVEN drives in standard configuration; NINE
if the bottom drives are stacked two-high.

300 MHz 8600s are pretty good machines, and are often available for very
reasonable prices, while 300 and 350 MHz 9600s always go for a very stiff
premium.

[ * ] because of problems with the processor, all six slots might not be
usable; OWC has a procesor ZIF card which claims to solve the "six slot
problem"; this card is called the SSE ("six slot edition").
