Final Cut Pro on a 7500? Like stuffing a Ferrari engine in a Ford Pinto, even with a processor accelerator. You can use VideoShop with flying colors, earlier versions of Premier with some usefullness, other programs from earlier epochs do great, but even iMovie has serious burps pre-G3. To run serious video work, you need hardware compression added to the mix. The cheapest is the Avid card originally designed for the 6500, if your machine has built in av ports, but that uses proprietary software, although I've heard that after digitization you can export the stream to Premier, then back again for outout. After that, be prepared to spend dollars. Cheaper, in the short run, to just get a new G-4 low end model, or a late B&W G-3. Mid-range, like the Targas, are a possible fair value. The higher end pci board sets are still commanding good money, enough to make a new G-4 a real option, though nowhere near the $25 - $100 thou these boards originally cost. Poor Avid, now they position themselves as the Lexus to Apple's supposed Chevy, but with the new Apple Cinemaware added to the suite, that Chevy has a Hemi and the Lexus eats dust.
I just did a 6500 upgrade into video edit territory, and although the results are nice, the G-4 I have next to it just makes it all seem so...quaint. And the G-4 was just a hair spendier after all was said and done. on 5/12/02 11:01 PM, Richard Gilbert at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > Alright, I am going to cut to the chase: > > I have been asking "end game" questions for a week or two, but what I am > really after is advice on setting my old faithful 7500 for video editing. > > I realize I cannot turn this machine into a Dual 1GB G4, but I would like to > load 9.1, and run Final Cut Pro to *at least* do some "offline" work, the > final edit to be done at a local media cooperative. > > Any video editors out there? > Any advice? > Any ideas? > -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
