Yes.

and at this stage i would expect to be able to ping the mac from the pc
"ping 192.168.0.44" but i can't this is why i don;t think the network is even working 
at
this stage! i would also expect to be able to say run an ftp server locally on the pc 
and transfer
files that way (I have done this before, but to a linux machine)

Well at least it's not just me! Which part of the faq? I can't seem to find it!
Also which extensions? i turned all off and i get an error about netbios not being 
loaded!

If I could ping the mac from the pc i would be happy and attempt to figure out the 
rest!

Works fine on my networked windows machines! (using NT (ie 2000/XP)  so all
shares have password/username access) However I just wish i could get
far enough to attempt to sort sharing problems!
