All-

All HD's are subject to being recognized by the "controller(s)", this
includes the access method.

A HD that is formatted by one "controller" often will NOT be recognized
at a "low level"
by another controller.

The "boot sector" is very subject to this problem.

The OS used generally makes no difference (but can have side effects).

The media can be recognized as valid, but the "low level" information
may not be recognized.

Formating (high level) a drive is NOT the same as "partitioning" (low
level) type operations.

If you move drives from one environment to another, be prepared to
address these problems.

I hope this clarifies some questions.
