The other replies to your post are great. I'll just toss in two or three additional
thoughts. Go into your Chooser, select the driver for your printer, and turn off
background printing. That's what's bringing your printer to its knees when other
apps are running in the foreground. Also, after you've added more RAM, increase the
memory allocation for Word, Photo Deluxe, etc., significantly. That should wake them
from their lethargy. They may never run the 4-minute mile, but they'll definitely
stop 'crawling.' Too, with 512MB of RAM, go into the Memory Control Panel and turn
off Virtual Memory. If, after you've added the additional RAM, the computer takes
too long to boot up, hold down the Command and Option keys while opening the Memory
CP, and turn off Startup Memory Tests. Word, and perhaps some of your other
programs, create temporary (.tmp) files that may not be getting deleted at shutdown
and filling up your disk (BTW, how big is your disk? do you have enough workspace?).
Go to versiontracker.com, download AutoPurge, and place the application (or an alias
to it) in your Startup Items folder. Next time you start up, all of those pesky
temporary files will be deleted. I agree with the others about keeping the 2-port
USB card and getting a powered USB hub into which you can plug the additional USB
devices. Hope this is helpful.

Good idea!
