Just this morning I was doing some tests with a Daystar Genesis MP360 (2-180Mhz 604es with a motherboard based upon the 9500) processor card in a 9600/200. Test 1: Just slapped card in the 9600 and booted with the original system software that came installed, 7.5.3 IIRC, and it booted fine. The included version of Apple System profiler only showed a 604/180 processor, did not identify 2 processors. I have an original Daystar system disk which includes the MP extentions and other needed software, but did not want to install it onto the 9600, so I don't know if that would have made a difference. Test 2: Copied the 9.1 version of ASP to the Hard disk and started up from my 9.1 CD. This time ASP identified the card as a 2 processor card with each at 180Mhz. NOTE: The following statements are PURE CONJECTURE, I have not tried any of the following The card should work in multiprocessor mode with apps written to take advantage of both of them (Photoshop and I don't know what else) under 7.x, 8.x and 9.x, but there maybe some needed extentions under the earlier OSs. I also don't know if using Xpostfacto and installing X would enable multiprocessing under X. Because of the multiprocessing ability of X, my hunch is that a MP card, even with dual 180 604s, should run acceptably- at least as well as a G3 300. This guess is because X can split finder functions and programs between the 2 processors. Note that dual processors are more effecient when you are running multiple apps that are not designed for them or when running one MP enabled app. END of PURE CONJECTURE.
