First, have you tried connecting one computer at a time directly to
the cable modem, and what results have you gotten? Your computer is
plenty fast for e-mail and web browsing, so that is not the problem.
Assuming both computers work correctly when they are connected
directly to the modem, you have one of two problems: the router is
not working correctly with the modem, or the computers are not
working correctly with the router. A location I recommend is
<http://www.threemacs.com/> which has mac specific information along
with <http://www.practicallynetworked.com/> which has general
information about sharing a connection. As a general note, one
thing to be cautious about is when switching from directly connecting
to the modem to the router, is that a number of settings have to
change subtly when you do it. On the Mac, I would recommend you
using the configurations of TCP/IP and in your case have 2: One
called Road Runner Direct and one Road Runner w/ Router. Each
configuration would be set as appropriate to connect to the Internet
as described. On my setup, I have to use a static setting for my IP
address when directly connected to my DSL modem, because the DHCP
server in it and my Mac don't get along. However, when using my
router, I use DHCP for everything and it works without a hitch.
