Can I take the innards of an 8500 and move them to the 8600 Case?

Sure, but the 8500 mobo won't match the nonexistent 8600 power supply.

It is a little known fact that the Beige G3 MT uses an ATX power supply
(although the Beige G3 DT *does NOT*), and that in this specific application,
a special adapter plate is used to adapt the ATX form factor power supply to
the G3 MT case, which is simply a reduced height version of the 8600/9600
case.

Sure, there's an extra fan in the Beige MT case, but then there's an extra
fan in a different place in the 8600/9500 case.

Therefore, one can power an early Mac PCI mobo (an 8500, e.g.) from an ATX
power supply, in an 8600/9600 case, provided:

1) an adapter plate is made for the ATX power supply,

2) the 20-pin ATX power supply cable is ... somehow ... adapted to the 22-pin
and 10-pin power supply cables required by the 8500/7500/7600/7200 mobo
powering system.

It's an interesting project, and not an impossible one, although I would
classify it as being "very difficult".

The plastic mobo supports can easily be moved from their 8600 or 9600
positions to those required for 8500s (or 9500s).
