Tim,
1. Try opening: 
Control Panels>Extensions Manager
and pick Mac OS x.x All where x.x is your OS version.
Restart verify that the problem disappears.
That will determine if a non-Apple extension was
causing your problem.

2. Create a new, empty "Preferences" folder in
your System folder so your Mac will remember your settings.
Then you can copy over a couple of preferences at a time,
restarting between each set, to figure out which one is causing
the problem.  (This is essentially what Conflict Catcher does
with extensions rather than with preferences.
