Tim,
Another thing you can try is to open your
Preferences folder then select from the Finder menu
View > as List
then click inside the Preferences window on the "Date Modified"
gray button.  This will sort your preferences by date and time from
newest to oldest and should give you a good clue
as to which was the last Preference that the OS was
working on just before the freeze.
