I'd be interested in folks advice about replacements for the early production Orange
Micro USB/FW card in my 8500/G3. It turns out that the problem with my new FW external
drive not working, is the OM card.
I was initially going to buy the OWC FW card for $19, and leave the Orange Micro card
in place for the USB ports, which I use for my Visor Deluxe. However, due to some
other problems I am wondering if _replacing_ the card might be the better approach.
The problems that developed after adding the OM card, (or the NewerTech G3 card that
was installed not long before), are that my PM8500 will often stall out immediately
after the chime, and require a 3 finger restart. Since trying to connect the FW drive,
the startup process has now also begun stalling out at the "Starting Up" screen --
cursor top left, progress bar less than 1/12 of the way along. The symptoms are the
same using the DiskWarrior CD. The DiskWarrior desktop pattern appears, but the
startup stalls out immediately after that. I finally got things to work when I
switched the CD burner to the other FW port a couple of months ago, but now the
symptoms are beginning to reappear.
Some options at OWC .......
1) Orange Micro OrangeLink+ 3 Port FW/4 Port USB 2.0 $119.
2) MacAlly 2 Port FW + 2 Port USB 2.0/1.1 $ 79
3) PowerLogix RapidFire USB & FW (for NL readers) $ 55
So my questions are, what are the advantage of getting the expensive card? (other than
more ports which I don't see any need for, since you can chain many devices together).
The PowerLogix doesn't say if it's v1.1 or v2.0, but should I even want USB 2.0? Can
USB2 be used with Macs running OS9.1? (incidentally the new FW HD also has a USB 2.0
port.
Thanks for any advice.

PS. Is anyone else experiencing these stalls at the "Starting Up" screen?
