It stays about the same with the cover off, though I try not to do that for very long since I have a couple hot-running PCI cards. With the power supply right above the processor card, along with the heat from the PCI cards below, I imagine it doesn't take very long for a hot spot to form when the loud monster side fan isn't circulating air.
The original low profile fan kept the processor a few degrees cooler, but it died on me and I replaced it with a 486 heatsink fan. The only problem is that there's too little space between the fan and the power supply chassis, so it's probably running hotter than it should. I've been considering the low profile processor fan that Tennmax makes, the Lasagna Slim, and with some modification it looks like a good match.
