Both the 8600 and 9600 have a fan mounted on the side cover that blows air into the case directly onto the PCI cards and the CPU card which are mounted horizontally. With this cover removed their is not enough air movement from convection alone to cool the processor. With the 7x00 case, the CPU card is vertical, and can cool with convection alone.
