I have been using generic ink in my Epsons for the past 3 years and not any ink related trouble (except that one time I tried to refill my own cartridge...). > > As we discussed before that ink was splattering on the rollers which > would put various marks on the paper. From the many responses, > getting various marks on the paper seems to be common. How the ink gets on the rollers is the mystery. Paper jams and improper height settings with thicker paper causes my problems (AFAIK). > One of the odd > things when talking to the Epson rep was that I could not get the > cartridge to line up, so that it could not be removed. Should have been able to coax the ink to that position which allows it to be removed. I believe holding down the button underneath the ink indicators for 3 seconds is suppose to move them into position. > Unlike, > HP or even Cannon where you can remove the heads. That is something to be weighed when deciding which printer to buy. If you do ANY quantity of printing, then, Epson is the printer I would recommend. I believe the 900 and 980 (I have one of each) are rated for 5000 pages per month, with an estimated total pages expected near the 75,000 mark. An acquaintance of mine in the printing business was using 2 Epson 980's. He said that one gave up at 115,000 pages, which is 40,000 pages beyond its estimated maximum. He also uses generic ink exclusively. Epson ink is described as being "durabrite". It is supposedly longer lasting and they (Epson) will tell you that there is a thickness difference...perhaps. However, there are companies out there that specialize in generic ink and they have been offering it for many years. I have had great luck so far, and couldn't afford to use the true "Epson" ink. Sometimes I go through a cartridge (double sized in 900 & 980) in 2 weeks or less. The Epson ones cost around 6 times that of what I pay for the generic cartridges. I have used true Epson though (the original ink that came with the printer) and couldn't tell any difference between the two results!!!
