I have the Box for the cheap Belkin card right here and it says Mac OS 8.6
or higher.  You have to Download the Apple USB Extension/driver from Apple's
web site, so you can try that extension with 8.1, but I think you need 8.6
at least.  I'm running 9.1 on my 8500 and it's pretty stable. although I
have heard stories to the contrary with these machines and OS 9.x
