when you're decking out a ProTools|HD system costing hundreds of thousands of dollars and need 7 DSP cards running so you can nail that 128-track pop track mixdown, an extra grand doesn't really matter. You'll spend 5 times that on cabling.... You're right though, Digidesign really know how to charge for stuff that shouldn't be expensive.... like a rebadged Macally USB keyboard, complete with lots of coloured keys and their shortcut commands for ProTools, that costs US$250, when the plain-jane keyboard from Macally costs like $U$40. Though stuff like the Digi001 and Mbox are actually really good buys if you consider the cost of getting an equivalent interface PLUS Cubase or Logic.
