The Mozilla project is the "underpinnings" of Netscape. AOhelL takes Mozilla, adds the AOL stuff, changes the look a bit, adds a dictionary and calls it Netscape. You want your own browser? You too can use Mozilla. That's what OSI is all about.
For the whole story, visit <http://www.mozilla.org/editorials/mozilla-overview.html> and <http://www.mozilla.org/fear.html>. If you decide to try it, start with version 1.0.1. The later version has some problems. 1.0.1 is what AOL will turn into the next release of Netscape. "Occasionally the multiple roles played by a contributor cause confusion. For example, Netscape is a major contributor to the Mozilla code. At the same time, Netscape uses the Mozilla code as the basis of its Netscape 6 product. This has caused some people to mistakenly believe that the Mozilla code and Netscape 6 are the same thing. This is not correct. Anyone is free to use Mozilla code to create a product, and to combine Mozilla code with other code to create that product. Netscape does this, starting with Mozilla code, adding a set of Netscape specific items and additional code, and creating Netscape 6. Anyone is also free to use a subset of the Mozilla code in a product. Many companies do this, using the Gecko layout engine, for example." I've been using it for nearly a year now. It renders pages that Netscape won't. It's an integrated browser/e-mail client. I have an American Heritage Dictionary right here next to the computer and it contributes *nothing* to enriching the wealthiest man on the planet. Try it. You might like it.
