Does your XP box have to be named something? For example I had to call 
my machine C03330655-a to access my @home account.
If this is the case, try renaming whichever mac you wish to use in the 
filesharing control panel with this name. Then in the tcp CP make a new 
config.
Connect via ethernet and configure manually. You can get the info needed 
to fill in the boxes from the pc by running winipcfg, sorry dont know 
what its called under XP, probably the same. Worked well for me until I 
bought the hub.

The DHCP in OT1.1.3 isn't real good which is why the requirement for 
OS8.5 so it will automagicly find the address. Try doing it manually and 
see how you get on. Remember that two machines on the same network can 
not share the same name or address.
A hub/router would be easier and there's a few more options as well.
