The problem is when the power stays out for a long time.  The battery in the
UPS can only supply power for a certain time.  When it runs out the UPS
shuts off shutting off the Mac abruptly and improperly, ie; applications are
still running, files are open, etc.  Some UPS' have an interface port and
software that is installed on the computer that monitors the UPS.  When the
battery starts to get low it signals the software to begin closing files,
quitting apps and does a proper shutdown of the system so it has a better
chance of starting back up normally when power returns.

This is what I'm looking for.  Yes, currently the UPS will switch to battery
automatically but when it runs out the Mac goes down hard.
