Hi all,

Does anyone know or have a good solution to using a UPS with a somewhat
older Mac? I have a Power Computing system that I run as a server. Power
here is sometimes a little flaky so a small UPS to let it ride through brief
outages would be a good thing.

The problem I have found is that most of the current crop of UPS's either
refuse to acknowledge the existence of Macs or when they do they only
provide support for the newest models.

I realize any UPS, properly sized, will keep any system running for a few
minutes, what concerns me is the UPS being able to shut down the system
properly before it's batteries are exhausted during an extended outage if
I'm not around. Right now, a long outage means the UPS runs until it shuts
down due to no battery power left and this rather rudely shuts down the Mac.
It is set to restart after a power fail and it is set to check the disk
after an improper shutdown, I'd just like to prevent problems rather than
trying to recover from them afterwards.

APC makes a line that has software for OS 9.x but says its for iMacs and
G3/G4's only. It communicates via USB. Since I have a USB card installed I
bought the UPS and hooked it up. Apple System Profiler sees and properly
identifies the UPS on the USB bus. The software warns that it is an
unsupported machine when the install is started but it lets me continue. It
adds a couple of extensions and a control panel and after a restart
selecting the control panel gives the message 'couldn't find PowerMgrLib -
update power source'. Thinking this might be an extension or library I went
looking for it including using Tome Viewer on the OS 9 install CD, plus the
9.1 and 9.2 updates. Nowhere to be found. Googling for it found an Apple
developer web page that makes it sound like it is a part of the OS or maybe
firmware on the newer machines.

I have an older APC UPS on a PC that connects via RS232 port. So I thought
that maybe if I could find some older APC software for Mac that would
support this model and a proper cable or wiring diagram to build one I could
connect it to the modem or printer port on the Mac (and move the new USB UPS
to the PC which has built-in USB). A search of APC's site only seems to
reveal download links for the latest and greatest.

I went searching for other UPS manufacturer's, Tripp-Lite, MGE, Belkin all
seem to support just the same newer Macs.

So does anyone know of any third party software to shut down a Mac on a
signal from a UPS? Old copies of APC Mac software? Any suggestions?

Thanks for any help!
