Thanks for the advice, but its hardly a new feature. I have it disabled on 8.6. What I'm talking about is a pause after all the extensions have loaded, before getting the Finder. Apple tech support says its normal, and that OS 9 "was not intended for older machines." They also say that performance degradation is "normal" for the older machines, contrary to what the product claims. Believe me, this was a pretty serious issue with me, and I have been around the block with Apple on it several times.
Get this, the tech support person who helped me was rude, yet there was no one to complain to, as the team is "self supervising."
