At that point, two important things are happening, either of which 
could be the cause of your pause...

1.  Your dhcp client has begun hunting for a dhcp server.  It uses 
the old death-grip theory of computing... so your Mac will seemingly 
"stall" until it either gets a response or generates a temporary 
lease.

Try setting TCP/IP to a static address, then reboot.  If that gets 
rid of the stall, poke a stick at your DHCP Server's administrator.


2.  The Finder is fooling around with the desktop databases of the 
various disks that are mounted.  The larger or more fragmented the 
databases, the longer it takes to load 'em.

Try rebuilding the desktop databases...
