I'm new here and new to Macs in general so forgive me if the answers to my questions are obvious. I'm PC/Linux aware but recently aquainted myself with a Quadra 605. I know nothing about PowerMacs.
I'm trying to resurrect a stripped down 7500/100 that I found recently. It had no Hard Drive, RAM, or CD-ROM when I found it. I bought and installed an Apple 600i CD-ROM, installed 512M of RAM, and installed the Hard Disk that I had in my Quadra 605. The HD had MacOS 7.5.5 on it. The 7500/100 booted up and ran ok. I'm not sure, but I think I was able to put a disk on the CD-ROM and read it. However, since the ethernet driver was for the aftermarked card in the Quadra 605 I couldn't get the onboard ethernet to work in the PowerMac. So I decided to wipe the disk and reinitialize it in the Quadra, put it into the PowerMac, and load MacOS 7.5 from a friend's CD. The Disk Tools diskette that came with the CD is recognized at boot up. However, I get a message that says something like "This disk won't work in this model Mac. Get the latest installer". (Sorry, but I can't remember the exact verbage). I then went to the local neighborhood Mac store and was given a disk that should boot ok on this machine. When I insert this disk the machine ejects it and I get a diskette in the middle of the screen with a blinking x on it. I've read that it's possible to boot directly from the CD-ROM by holding down the c key as the machine boots. Doing that gave me an icon of a diskette in the middle of the screen with a blinking question mark on it. I also heard that you can direct the machine to boot from a certain SCSI ID by a key combination that includes the SCSI ID of your CD-ROM. I got the same result as holding down the c key. I'm wondering where to start trouble shooting. Is there a jumper on the CD-ROM that needs to be set (other than the SCSI-ID) in order to allow the machine to boot from the CD-ROM? I got the PDF file of the original owners manual (not the technical manual) but there are no close-up images of the back of the CD-ROM Other things I've tried are taking out the PRAM battery and hitting the CUDA button before booting but nothing has worked. One last thing...I noticed that after replacing the PRAM battery the machine gives me the chime sound at the first boot attempt. After the boot fails and I try to boot the second time I get just the first instant of the chime sound. it is cut off and the machine just sits there. I don't know if that points to a specific problem but I thought I'd mention it. Any pointers would be appreciated, Mike -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
