The faster the better bearing in mind that some sites really go
overboard with the size of their pages (sometimes unnecessarily) and the
modem speed is expressed in kilobits rather than kilobytes - so divide
the speed by eight to get the maximum data transfer - around 5-7
kilobytes per second max for 56k if you're lucky - generally much less.
Added to this is the translation time for the browser to render the
html, perl, java, jpegs and gifs etc into readable form - a function which
is directly related to processor speed - so a 90mhz Powermac with a 56k
modem will get the data at the same speed as a G4/800 but the translation
will be very fast on the G4. I use IE 5.1.6 - the latest version and much
improved as it does not install any extensions and libs in the system
like some older versions whose removal instructions ran to three
pages....and Claris Emailer 2 for email - oldish but a very excellent
email application.
I must admit that I don't really know what AOL is even though I keep
getting the cd's through the post...I have five IP accounts just setup
with TCP/IP and Remote Access......what does AOL the application do?

     Pete
