I've had no problems connecting two Macs with a cross-over cable.
But it is not enough to simple connect them physically:
First, open the AppleTalk control panel on both machines, and set it 
to Ethernet.
Then, one of the machines need to have a shared folder (or you can 
share the whole HD). On this machine you must turn on File Sharing 
(the other machine will be the "client"). The sharing machine will 
show up in the Chooser on the other, and can be mounted on the 
desktop as any hard drive. From there, it's all drag-and-drop.
