200 MHz is the max for an Apple-built 604e processor in these machines.

I run a 533 MHz G3 "Six Slot Edition" MPe ZIF in my 9600 ... you can too.

However, the bus speed is still limited to that which it was under the old 
604e, irrespective of whatever third party processor you may be running.

So, it's not odd at all ... it's the way the machine was designed to work. 
And, it works very well, too ... within the basic limitations of the 
motherboard design.
