Before you try to reinstall software,,,... Boot on your MacOS CD and use Disk First Aid to repair all disk volumes. If you can't boot cleanly after that, boot on the CD and trash the System, Finder, and CarbonLib prefs. Those three critters contain parameters that come into play as the Finder is mounting volumes, and they can all be easily corrupted during bad shutdowns. If you can't boot cleanly after that, use something like Techtool to delete your disk volumes' desktop databases and rebuild them from scratch. Aside - don't be so quick to zap the pram. Most of the pram parameters, if corrupted, will cause the boot process to freeze or crash waaaaaay before it gets to launching the Finder! This type of problem, as you describe, it is more likely that something in one of those prefs files or in one of the disk volume headers has been corrupted.
