> A 500 MHz G3 will work fine and it can be had for about $150. A G4 > shouldn't be less than 450 MHz and that will cost about $200. or more. > > A hard drive is probably $60. > > So the cheapest you can go is about $400. to $450. on your 9500. > > A Blue and White G3 Tower 350 MHz 6gig (or a 12 gig fast SCSI) can be > had for $350. if you shop. You would only have to add RAM and upgrade > the ZIF. I run OS X 10.2.4 on one of these and with the stock 350 MHz > and it is not painfully slow. > > Roger I have a 7300 with an xlr8 MACHSpeed G3/300 for $75 added a USB/Firewire combo for$50 bought a 17" Monitor for$50 bought a couple of 128 DIMMS for$40 bought a 9GB SCSI Seagate HD for $45 bought a 4.5 GB SCSI IBM HD for$25 for a total of nearly $300. I didn't have to purchase my Jag since I am a teacher so I lucked out there. Almost forgot! bought an iMicro Twin Turbo for $20 for a grand total of just a bit over $300. Put all that in over the course of 9 months. If I could have purchased a G3 at eBay for that cost over that amount of time I suppose I would have done it, but I didn't really think I was going to take this computer this far. I have been really happy with it. While it's not "quicksilver," it's not so slow either. when you consider that the machine isn't supposed to run the OS to start with and yet I get all the features of OS X... I know there are some I can't take advantage of, but one day I'll finally save up for that A1 Mac... Or maybe I'll just buy it the way I bought this one, on eBay. It's really rewarding to look at the work you may put into the machine and see what you can get out of one of these ol' babies. It boggles the mind of the PC folks at school. They look at me funny and wonder that some ol' puter can do the things this one does. Love my Mac! Jim Sanderson -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
