>> Can I use the IDE drive via the Trio card >> as the bootable drive? > > I have a SIIG ATA133 card connected to a Maxtor 60G (7200 rpm) drive and use it as my boot drive (it's partitioned into 3 virtual drives; it makes disk repair utilities go a lot faster when scanning or doing repairs so it doesn't have to do the whole 60 gigs).
When I installed my ATA, I desided to leave in one 4 gig SCSI internal drive with system software, just in case. If the computer had problems starting from the ATA drive, it would still be able to find the SCSI drive and boot from that. The SCSI also has all of my utitlity software on it, so if I should have to start from that one, I can use it, hopefully, to repair any problems with the larger ATA drive. So far (about 6 months of use), that hasn't been necessary. However, I have had one weird quirk in using the ATA drive--when I attempt to copy over large files, say 20 MB or larger, I often get a dialog box warning me something to the effect that 'THERE IS A PROBLEMS WITH THE "STARTUP DRIVE" DISK; SOME INFORMATION MAY HAVE BEEN LOST. PLEASE CHECK THE DISK FOR ERRORS' or something close to that. So far, I haven't been able to see that there are actually any write problems in the file copies, but just in case, I copy my large graphic files to the internal SCSI (that always works, without any warnings) and the later drag the graphic file back over to the ATA drive in the Finder (that always works without the warning dialog box as well). I contacted SIIG tech support with this issue, and was told, via e-mail, to place the ATA driver card in the first PCI slot, which it already was! So to date, this issue hansn't been resolved. But I sleep a little better at night having left an internal SCSI in my 9500... (An interesting side note: the utility software that came with my old XLR8 G3 card IDs my SIIG ATA card as an XLR8 branded ATA card.) ---Alex ____________________________________________ GOD BLESS AMERICA!
