The PM4400/StarMax computers have a strange RAM setup. Slots 2 and 3 support 'Double Bank' DIMMs while Slot 1 only supports a 'Single Bank' DIMM with each bank having a maximum of 32MB. It sounds like your 32MB DIMM is a Double bank DIMM (2 banks of 16MB each) and the computer is reading only one bank of it.
