I'm the guy who had the comatose PM4400 a couple of weeks ago. Thanks to the advice of a few people on this list, I got it to start up by using three AA batteries. I replaced the three AAs with a Rayovac 840.
I also installed two 64MB sticks of RAM. Before today, it had 48 MB of RAM. There was a 16MB stick in Slot 1 and a 32MB stick on Slot 2. (At least I think that's what each one was. I'm assuming the thicker one was the 32MB.) I pulled the RAM from Slot 1, replaced it with the RAM from Slot 2, and put the two new 64 MB DIMMS in Slots 2 and 3. "About This Computer..." reported 144MB RAM so I figured I had put the wrong RAM in Slot 1. I swapped the stick in Slot 1 with the one that had been there originally, started up and still got a report of 144MB RAM. It's really not a big deal, but I'm curious. I suppose it's possible that I'm misremembering and the computer never had 48 MB RAM, but I'm pretty sure it did. I'm just thinking maybe someone has an idea why "About This Computer..." and Apple System Profiler would both report only 144 when it should be reporting 160 MB.
