The latest release of Yellowdog is proving somewhat difficult to install on
old world machines. Starting with YD 2.1 and upgrading to the latest is
often mentioned as the easiest approach. Yellowdog is based on Redhat
packages which are perhaps the most common third party binary packages. And
overall Yellowdog is a very well respected Linux distribution.

I beleive Linux has been declared off topic on this list. There are
newsgroups devoted to Linux on PPC hardware and many people who have setup
and use Linux on PPC machines have web sites covering their experience in
detail. A google search with "8500 Linux" will probably generate a wealth of
information.
