As much as I like 8.6, I'm beginning to advocate 9.1 more often. 8.6 is nice and stable and fast. But an awful lot of new softwares, and software updates, now require at least OS 9.1. 9.1 is a tad more stable than 8.6, IF it's given a lot of memory (>64MB). Carpe DIMM! You can never have too much memory! :) And I've found its performance, even on older Macs, to be decent - on par with 8.6's. One case in point: AOL Instant Messenger. The last release that runs on OS 8 was in April of 2001 (vers 4.3.1232). It contains a number of stability bugs, memory leaks, and corrupts your system fonts after transferring files under OS 8.x.
